from the weekend: spring blooms

spring blooms // sarah sherman samuel“When I heard that there were artists, I wished I could some time be one. If I could only make a rose bloom on paper, I thought I should be happy! Or if I could at last succeed in drawing the outline of winter-stripped boughs as I saw them against the sky, it seemed to me that I should be willing to spend years in trying.”
-Lucy Larcom

Last week was a pretty hectic week that ended up spilling right over into the weekend. On the plus side, I’m working on some exciting new things with A Sunny Afternoon and for the blog, and I can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel of our renovation. We did sneak outside a few times to enjoy a break in the day and noticed that Spring is in full bloom around our LA neighborhood.

Hope you spent some time doing something you love. x

from the weekend: the good, the bad, and the really ugly

03.23.14-weekendThe good: Saturday we drove downtown to check out the Parachute Market, a beautifully curated design fair and then stopped by the equally beautiful Ace on the way back for a little snack.

The bad: On the drive home I started not feeling so well.

The really ugly: We arrived home to a freshly varnished hallway which I immediately had to put my personal stamp (ie footprints) in, while running to the bathroom where I became violently ill and stayed for the remainder of the night. (tmi? probably).

I should also note that it was NOT the Ace’s food that poisoned my system. I am pretty sure a late night taco truck run the evening before was the culprit. Ew. I hope your weekend was better then mine!

from the weekend: joshua tree

01.09.14-weekendAfter a week of my parents camping out in our living room on a fold out sofa, we figured we better treat them to a nice weekend away. The four of us packed up the car and headed for Joshua Tree, this time with our pups in tow. We went back to 29 Palms Inn where we lazed around in the courtyard outside our room (Irene’s Adobe is the best!), hiked around the national park, and soaked up some sunshine.

You know, just doing my best to keep up my New Years goal to take more weekend trips. :) (finally a resolution I reeeally want to keep up with). See our last visit to Joshua Tree here and more from this one here.

Hope you had a nice weekend. x

from the weekend: madewell & parents visiting

01.02.14-weekendThe Madewell party on Thursday was a blast, Prosecco & shopping should always go hand in hand. :)  Thanks to everyone that came out, it was so fun getting to meet some of you in person.

My parents also arrived for a visit this weekend, we were hoping to have the construction done by this visit but, not so much. They will be enjoying their stay on our pull-out sofa in the den/storage room. Thankfully they are good sports and to sweeten their stay we will be treating them to some tasty meals, like our brunch above at a weekend favorite, Salt Air. We also watched the most boring Super Bowl in all the years of Super Bowl (right?) but at least we had this to keep our attention.

Did you guys to anything fun for Super Bowl?

from the weekend: naps & hikes

01.26.14weekendI have to say 2014 is kind of kicking my butt. I have been juggling a bit too many things, and the stress of it has already started to take a toll (I was supposed to worry less this year rememeber?). It is hard not to work extra long hours when you work for yourself but I don’t think that is good for anyone (especially the work itself!) so last week, I vowed to take back control of my schedule and to plan in some quality me (& Rupe) time. It is all about the balance right?

My two favorite weekend activities for relaxation and recharging have to be napping and hiking, so I made sure to squeeze in some time in for both. We also enjoyed the sounds of silence with a break in the construction (waiting on another inspection), which is most likely what led to the napping.

Our hike took us around Pelican Cove in Palos Verdes. We waded in the tide pools, had a picnic, and laughed at Cracker clumsily navigating through the rocks. The cloudy skies made the horizon line disappear which I always find so eerily beautiful. More photos from the hike here.

Hope you had a great weekend and that you are doing better with your resolutions then me!

from the weekend: los angeles in two days

griffith observatory, los angeles // @sarahshermansamuelI got to play tourist in my own city this weekend with one of my best gal pals who was visiting from San Francisco. We caught up while buzzing around town to a lot of my favorite spots. Here’s the short list for our whirlwind weekend in LA.

We had an unforgettable dinner at Alma, a peek at the new Ace Hotel downtown, a manicure at the most beautiful nail salon in Beverly Hills, brunch at Gjelina & Salt Air, shopping on Abbot Kinney as well as in Silver Lake, another tasty meal at Sqirl, hiking and taking in the view at Griffith Observatory, tacos and drinks at Alibi room, and a long, and by then, delirious meal at Cafe Gratitude.

from the weekend: holiday recovery

01.05.13-weekendIt was hard saying goodbye to the midwest winter wonderland but I can say I am pretty pleased that we are missing out on the crazy low temps that are hitting there this week. (I mean -50 degree wind chill? no thank you). We spent the weekend slowly de-christmasing our house, brunching at a favorite spot, and hiking and snuggling with our much missed pups.

Hope you had a lovely weekend.
