from the weekend: making room for baby

11.24.14-weekendThis weekend we finally moved most of our clothes into the new closet in our bedroom and out of what will soon be the nursery, starting to make room for baby. We also had a couple nice meals out, watched some walking dead (I don’t know how we got into it but am totally hooked and am having crazytown dreams because of it), and had our driveway and front walkway demo’d to get ready to pour a new one. We also picked out the winner of the Thanksgiving Tablescape giveaway. Congrats Carin!

from the weekend: los alamos

los alamos // alamo motel // sarah sherman samuelMy parents are visiting from Michigan this week so we took them up to a darling little tiny town Los Alamos. It is about two and half hours north of LA which makes for a great weekend getaway and you know I like me some weekend trips. We stayed in The Alamo Motel which is the newest addition to the Shelter Social Club roster. It is in the process of getting renovated and we were lucky enough to snag one of the new rooms. If you plan on going sometime soon, it is a good idea to request one of the renovated spaces as there are still only a few (and completely adorable).

A few of our favorite spots from the weekend were…

To Eat:
Full of Life Flatbread
Bob’s Well Bread Bakery

To Drink:
Muni Wine Tasting Room (right at the hotel)
Babi’s Beer Emporium

To See:
Oceano Dunes (about 45 mins north)
Ostrichland (feed some ostrich and emus)
Antique Shops galore

from the weekend: getaway with friends

cayucos beach // sarah sherman samuelOn Friday we drove up the coast to Cayucos to meet some friends and share a little beach rental for the weekend. They live in San Francisco so Cayucos worked out perfectly for us to meet halfway between our two home cities. I’ll share a bit more of the trip once I gather up the photos (you can see a few more here). We had the best time enjoying the small town pace and catching up with old friends. Hope you had some time to re-charge as well. x

from the weekend: indigo dip & shibori dyeing

shibori & dip dyed indigo // sarah sherman samuelThis weekend we stuck around the house, handed out halloween candy on friday, went out to brunch and caught a matinee (that movie is cray) on Saturday and then spent Sunday dyeing our hearts out! This is my first time ever dyeing and let me just say it is SO addicting and SO MUCH FUN. Once I got started I wanted to dye EVERYTHING. No white surface is safe.

Above are a few of the finished products. These are the tea towels I made, dip dyeing a few (and some curtains) and also using some shibori techniques to make the different patterns.

shibori indigo dyeing // smitten studio shibori indigo dyeing // smitten studio Here are a few of the shibori tea towels once they were pulled out of the indigo dye. For this technique, I cut down various wood shapes (2 of each size) and then accordion folded the fabric to just a bit bigger than the wood shape. Once the fabric was folded up I sandwiched it between the two pieces of wood and secured it with rubber bands. Wherever the rubber bands and wood blocks make contact with the fabric is where the negative space (white space) shows in the pattern.

Experimenting with different shapes and different amounts of rubber bands create endless pattern options, I could seriously have kept going and going but I had already turned my entire backyard into a dye-house and damn daylight savings time was cramping my style. (Sidenote: the dye does keep for a couple days if you keep it in an airtight container).

dip dyed indigo // sarah sherman samuelindigo dyeing // smitten studioI used this dye kit by Noon Design Studio which gave all the ingredients you need to make the dye, rubber gloves, rubber bands, and full instructions. Other items you will need are: a big bucket for the dye, the wood blocks in various shapes, clothes line/drying rack and the fabric for dyeing.

With how busy things have gotten with both A Sunny Afternoon and Smitten Studio lately, I haven’t made much time for anything but work or play in the form of travel. I forgot how much of a creative boost comes from trying out a new type of craft just for fun. I am currently on a maker’s high! Have you guys tried dyeing?

from the weekend: nesting & beach breaks

manhattan-beachWe had a busy weekend of errands and closet planning (our new master bedroom closet is still an empty box). Our clothes are currently in a huge pile on the bed in the guest bedroom, which is supposed to become nursery, so after a trip to Home Depot and a marathon Ikea mission (aren’t they always), we have some ingredients to build out the closet and make room for baby. We rewarded ourselves after the exhausting day of shopping with a break at the beach, watching the big waves crash in and eating my favorite iced oatmeal cookies.

Hope you had a lovely weekend. x

from the weekend: baby showers & birthday parties

10.20.14weekendThis weekend we got a taste of what is to come with a little one. I had a friend’s baby shower on Saturday and then a 4 year olds birthday party on Sunday. We were surrounded by little ones, moms and moms and dads to be, and I found myself thanking God I have friends with kids to help show me the way (especially one’s that throw an epic boy scout party like the one above! :).

I reached the 5 month mark and might not wear anything but dresses for the rest of the pregnancy. So comfortable and who needs pants anyway?

from the weekend: malibu

end of summer // malibu // smitten studiomalibu airbnb // smitten studioPool time, book reading, a beautiful wedding, beach days, and this peaceful mountain top rental property made for a pretty wonderful weekend in Malibu for this mama to be. I found the cabin on Airbnb which came complete with a private pool and gorgeous mountain views. Even though we were less than an hour from home, we could have been a million miles away, waking up to the sound of a distant rooster crow and cows mooing! I love living in the city but I also crave these quiet escapes.

morning view // malibu airbnb // smitten studioOur morning view of the mist coming up from the ocean (above) and the walk down to my favorite beach, El Matador, which was just a short drive down the mountain.

el matador state beach // smitten studiobackyard wedding // malibuI have never been to a more stunning backyard wedding. Candles floated in the pool, hung from the trees in lanterns, and were nestled all around the garden. The interior shot was of the bride and groom’s house, I just couldn’t NOT take a photo. :)

el matador state beach // smitten studioel matador state beach // smitten studioWe ended the weekend with a day at El Matador and at 21 weeks pregnant the walk back up to the car was definitely a little more difficult than I remember! (still worth it though).

Places we enjoyed:
Our Airbnb Rental
Nobu (best seaside restaurant)
The Malibu Cafe (tucked back in the mountains about 6 mins from our rental)
El Matador State Beach
Malibu Wines (we didn’t go this trip but great for wine tasting)
Malibu Country Mart (shopping and star sighting if you are into that ;)

from the weekend: impromptu palm springs trip

palm-springs-weekendOur friends Sarah and Lou are in the process of selling their GORGEOUS house in Palm Springs so we headed out there to celebrate and have one last hurrah in the dreamy space. Pool time, good friends, and lots of laughs made for the best weekend. I even got a little sun on the neon white belly. :)

Hope you had a nice weekend. Fall is still no where to be seen in these parts! x sarah

from the weekend: brunch & nesting

09.29.14-weekendThis weekend Rupe and I did a lot of furniture store browsing, trying to get inspired to start planning the nursery design. We hit a lot of our favorite West Hollywood shops…  Lawson Fenning, Organic ModernismNickey Kehoe, and Emperic. While these are definitely not baby stores, I like to pull inspiration and get ideas from places like these because, nursery or not, I still want it to have a similar aesthetic to the rest of the house. We made a full day of it including lunch (and the must-have biscuits) from Hart and the Hunter.

One piece of furniture we did pick up for the baby’s room was on Sunday at the Santa Monica Flea Market. We found this vintage (I think its a Homecrest) rocking chair! It came with all the cushions as well, but I am going to have those reupholstered/re-made. At least it is one purchase for the coming baby down, about a billion more to go.
