from the weekend: oscars and oh joy brunch

oh joy for target // brunch // sarah sherman samuelThis weekend I celebrated the upcoming launch of Oh Joy’s collaboration with Target at a brunch with creative friends and inspiring women, like Joy herself. The line is just as adorable as you think it would be (I call dibs on the bud vases! :)), and it launches march 16th! On Sunday Rupe and I did a major re-organization and cleaning marathon of the house, and since we both were completely out of clean clothes, towels, and underwear… we watched most of the Oscar’s at the laundromat!

Happy Monday!

Happy New Year!

We spent New Years Eve with one of my oldest friends and her husband in a SUPER snowy chicago. We rented this great loft, shared a delicious meal, played ping pong, and danced our way into 2014. There was something really special about ending a year while reminiscing about our childhood and looking back at where we both were at different stages of life.

golden new years eve // smitten studioNow, looking back over the past year as it came to a close, I saw a lot of change in 2013. There were big changes in my career path, (I worked my last day at my previous job and launched A Sunny Afternoon), and changes in my surroundings (moving and renovating). This time last year things definitely looked a lot different from what they do now, and I’m looking forward to seeing where 2014 will take us.

I loved this quote by Neil Gaiman and it couldn’t ring more true for myself and for my wish to you…

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.

So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”

I am still working out my resolutions for this year but I am sure it will be filled with more change, more doing, making, and seeing, and definitely more mistakes. I mentioned a few areas I would like to work at on instagram, like traveling more, worrying less, and loving more, but I’d like to make more specific goals as well, tangible things that lead to the bigger picture. Goals like hiring an assistant so that I am free to create more, or getting my studio set up and organized so that I am less frazzled. While I am still getting mine all sorted out, what are some of your resolutions for 2014?

Cheers to mistakes! x

smitten studio top 10 posts in 2013

2013 has been a wild ride! Here’s a round-up of Smitten Studio’s top 10 posts this year.

A Sunny Afternoon // Napkins & Serving Boards1. The launch of my line A Sunny Afternoon definitely takes the cake as one of the top moments of the year. See the original post here.

open shelving // cabin kitchen // smitten studio2. We finished work on the cabin (well, for now at least) that we slowly renovated ourselves, where the kitchen went from this, to this.

New Zealand Road Trip // Smitten Studio3. Rupert and I spent my birthday in New Zealand where we road tripped around the north island in a vintage Kombi. It was the trip of a lifetime (see part 1 & par 2).

DIY Garment Rack // Smitten Studio4. One of the top DIY projects from this year was this garment rack. (see all the DIY’s posts here)

stop-smell-the-roses-print15. My “Stop and Smell the Roses” print was featured in Glamour Magazine. I also spotted it in the home of Anika & Ken Yael Natori in Lonny Magazine, and in Julia Engel’s abode.

ikea tarva dresser DIY // smitten studio6. The other top Smitten Studio DIY of the year was this simple Ikea hack.

Style at Home // Sarah Sherman Samuel // Smitten Studio7. A big change in 2013 was with the selling of our home and the buying and moving into a fixer upper. Glitter Guide sent over a photographer for a Style at Home feature just weeks before we moved out. It was the perfect way to say goodbye to the first place Rupert and I owned together.

living room styling // smitten studio8. In the new house we started renovating by refinishing the floors, knocking down a few walls, and painting so that right now at least the living room is livable.

A Sunny Afternoon // Napkins & Serving Boards9. We sold out of the first collection of A Sunny Afternoon products much quicker then anticipated so I added new designs, stocked up on some of the favorites, and launched the winter collection with a pancake brunch with friends.

kitchen cabinets // smitten studio10. And finally, we started on the kitchen in the new house by completely gutting it and putting in new cabinets and countertops.

Happy Friday, and here’s to a happy 2014 to you all!

Happy Christmas Eve

Dart Dj Holiday Party // smitten studioOnly one more sleep until Christmas! This year Rupe and I weren’t able to have a Christmas party at our house because of all the renovations, but oh how we made up for it by attending a whole lot of them. Of course Smilebooth was present at most of the soirees, which is always a hoot. At this one, my fellow girls in gold and black and I turned it into a dance booth to properly document our accidental coordinating outfits. Clearly Santa Rupe wouldn’t be left out.

Happy Christmas Eve!

Thanksgiving table for two

thanksgiving table for two // A Sunny Afternoon // Smitten StudioThis year Rupert and I are going to have a Thanksgiving meal, just the two of us, cooking in our kitchen together (it will be the first real meal cooked in the new space!) and reflecting on all we are thankful for before heading out to drop in on a few friends’ celebrations around town.

thanksgiving table for two // A Sunny Afternoon // Smitten Studiothanksgiving table for two // A Sunny Afternoon // Smitten StudioI like to set the table the day before (in this case two days before, because I am feeling festively nerdy) so that the next day we can dedicate all our time to the food. I make a pretty good mess in the kitchen and since I don’t cook all that often, I have to concentrate hard on getting all the timing right. One less thing to think about helps make sure we aren’t eating dry stuffing or cold turkey. ;)

How are you guys spending your Turkey Day?

smitten studio in Martha Stewart Weddings

martha stewart weddings // smitten studioI’m so excited to finally share this wedding I designed that’s in the pages of this months Martha Stewart Weddings! You may remember (but probably not because it was about a year and a half ago) me working on some pieces for the wedding here and here. My dear longtime friend, Anne was the bride and I am so happy that I was able to be a part of her big day by standing up as one of the matrons of honor as well as designing the event from top to bottom.

One of my favorite pieces I made for their wedding was this textile that hung over a fireplace during the reception. The bride and groom (Anne and Shane) are pictured above holding it’s edges. Anne & Shane collected photos of both of their families and I created silhouettes of each family member from the photos, essentially making a pictorial family tree.

martha stewart weddings // smitten studioAnne was stunning in Reem Acra and Shane was looking dapper in Proper Suit. They were married on the beach of Lake Michigan at a summer camp that Anne always pictured as her wedding location, just a few blocks from where she grew up.

martha stewart weddings // smitten studioAlong with the stationery suite and the family silhouette textile, I made chalkboard directional signs, an interactive seating chart, custom painted bean bag game boards, rubber stamped placemats, and other various signage. Her wedding also took place while I was developing A Sunny Afternoon so I was able to provide custom fabric napkins for each place setting that featured 4 coordinating patterns.

A Sunny Afternoon Launch Party

a sunny afternoon picnic launch party // smitten studioTwo weeks ago today I launched my line of American made goodies, A Sunny Afternoon. To celebrate its debut, I grabbed a bunch of friends and hit the park for a picnic fit for the occasion.

a sunny afternoon picnic launch party // smitten studioa sunny afternoon picnic launch party // smitten studioIt was my first chance to be able to use all of my products for a party and I’d say it was a huge success. I gathered my napkins and boards, packed up a couple baskets full of yummy treats, and rolled out a few blankets for a super simple evening picnic.

A special thank you to those of you that have bought a piece of this first collection. A few of the items have sold out already and quantities are dwindling. If there is an item that is out of stock and you’d like to see it come back, shoot me an email through the contact form. Some pieces will carry through to the next collection and some, once they’ve sold out, will be gone.

Another thank you to my creative and inspiring friends that made it out to celebrate A Sunny Afternoon and its debut into the world. I probably could not have done it without your support…
Ximena & Rob, Amanda, Kendra, Jaimi & Matt, Catherine, Audrey & Josh, Lauren, Julie & Brock, Jillian & Scott, Kristina & Brock, Lisa & Gary

… And the biggest thank you to Rupert for putting up with my “creative messes”, late night work sessions, and for always believing the impossible is possible. :)
